The day started with Yorkshire resuming their innings from 44 for three with A Lyth on 26 and GS Ballance on one.
The two batsmen gave their team a steady start as they took the score to 95 before Essex earned their first wicket of the day when Lyth, after scoring a 51-run knock, was dismissed by T Westley.
With the opener gone, McGrath came in the middle and staged an inspiring innings, countering the bowlers with confidence.
The duo took the score to 108 before, Westley, struck for the second time in the day by nabbing Ballance, who perished after forging an innings of 27 runs.
