Question:

Establishing residency for College?

What are the most important components for establishing a residency in another state (specifically Illinois)? I currently live in a separate state, but am considering graduate school at a Illinois public university. I understand that the state requires one to be a "bona fide" resident for at least one year prior to classes (unless a parent moves to the state -- not happening for me). So if I start living with my uncle/aunt in Illinois, work full time, open an illinois bank account, and live in illinois for a year prior to classes, would this be sufficient to be considered an in-state student? Any information or suggestions would be great. Thanks

  1. Probably not.  Living with relatives does not show an "intent" to stay in that state once you graduate.  Buy a house and pay state taxes, register to vote, work full time and be completely self supportive.  Hint: self supportive is NOT living with relatives.
