Establishing residency means i have to get a job, open a bank account and stuff like that right? Will I be able to have time to get a job and do school at the same time? I'm planning to go to school in california, my parents say they are willing to help me

(financially) but i heard that if 50% of the money i make has to come me, myself, to be able to establish residency, i don't know what I'm going to do...jungle work and college as a full time student at the same time?

  1. Each schools policy is a little different, but one thing is pretty standard.  You can't use time living in that state while going to college to establish residency in that state.  Get a copy of the schools policy and read it carefully... all the way to the end.  Most schools will require a year or two in the state, but you can't be enrolled in college during that time.

Also, often time for kids under 21, establishing residency is nearly impossible because of the fafsa and 100% self support qualifications they also require.  If the folks are paying for all or even part of your tuition and housing expenses you aren't exactly self supporting are you? A menial part time job isn't going to earn enough to pay that out of state tuition for sure.

They usually never print it anywhere, but most of the time it's a "Once an out of state student, always an out of state student" outcome.  Remember this when determining if you really want to incur that costs for you and your folks.
