Estanislao Goya shares the lead at the Final Qualifying Stage at the PGA Catalunya Resort
Estanislao Goya faltered in the fourth round of the Final Qualifying Stage of the European Tour’s Qualifying School, to post a one-over par 73, on Tuesday, November 27, 2012.
Yet, he managed to share the lead with Andy Sullivan, entering the final two rounds of the tournament that is being played at the Lake Course and the Stadium Course at the PGA Catalunya Resort.
Goya marked a flying start to his campaign by carding a six-under par 64 in the opening round.
He then complemented his first-round performance by posting rounds of one-under par and six-under par in the second and the third round.
Thereafter, he failed to keep the momentum going into the fourth round, and conceded four bogeys against three birdies to finish the day with a 12-under par overall score.
Despite performing poorly on day four, the Argentine was pleased with his overall progress in the tournament.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he expressed his confidence to retain his playing privileges on the European Tour.
Earlier this month, he participated in the SA Open Championship and finished tied for the 33rd position on the leaderboard.
However, the finish was not strong enough to elevate him into the top-119 in The Race to Dubai.
According to the European Tour’s qualifying policy, the top-119 players this season were allowed to retain their cards for the upcoming year.
Goya, in the meantime, held the 123rd position in the money list, which forced him to move to Spain, in a bid to participate in the qualifying school. He now plans to end the season on a high note, by winning the Final Qualifying Stage.
“Of course I want to win any tournament, even if this week is mostly about qualification,” said the 24 year old.
“Winning is always the ultimate priority and I’m doing everything I can to be on top. Winning might end up giving me a couple more opportunities next year, but I just need to finish as high up as I can”.
He added, “It was not easy today and I missed three greens on the back nine. I had a couple of bad lies and couldn’t save par. Other than that I played really well - I just didn’t hole as many putts as the first three days”.
