I need to show the following esterification reactions in chemical form..all with the "=" sign being the reaction with presence of H2SO4. Also, what does each product smell like?

methyl alcohol + salicylic acid = ? + H2O (wintergreen?)

Ethyl alcohol + acetic acid = ? + H2O (fruity?)

isobutyl alcohol + formic acid = ? + H2O (berry?)

amyl alcohol + acetic acid = ? + H2O (smell?)

octyl alcohol + acetic acid = = ? + H2O (smell?)

  1. methyl salicylate (wintergreen)

ethyl acetate (pears? it's nail polish remover)

    isobutyl formate (raspberry)

    amyl acetate (bananas + apples?)

    octyl acetate (orange)

Notice how the ester name comes about.

The first word comes from the alcohol (methyl, ethyl, propyl, etc.). To get the second word, take the root name of the acid (acetic, formic, butanoic, etc.), drop the -ic, and add -ate.
