Esther Vergeer dominates Aniek Van Koot in final – NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters
World number one, the Netherlands’ Esther Vergeer overpowered younger compatriot Aniek Van Koot in the women’s final of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters and won in straight sets of 6-1, 6-2 to accomplish her 14th event title and
her 434th consecutive match.
Opening the first round of the match was the world number 2 Koot, who was playing in her first NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters final and was not afraid to give everything she had at Vergeer. However, she hot off to a bad start was
unable to hold her service game.
On the other hand, Vergeer had capitalized on two early breakpoints to squander off three successive games and placed herself on the scoreboard with a mini lead of 3-0.  She further extended her lead to 4-0 at the end of the fourth
game.
It was in the fifth game that Koot made a return by holding her serve and even though she played amazingly and the crowd cheered her on, she was unable to muster the numbers. Nonetheless, Vergeer bagged the opening set with a breadstick
victory to go one up in the match.  
Commencing the second set was Vergeer and this both the players were able to hold their respective serves and placed themselves on the scoreboard at 1-1. However in the third and the fourth game the older Dutch (Vergeer) was able
to bag two consecutive games to take a mini lead of 3-1 at the end of the fourth game.
Subsequently, in the two games the players bagged a service game each and the score had shifted to 4-2 at the end of the sixth game. Vergeer further increased her lead to 5-2 at the end of the seventh game and was now only a game
away from victory. The defending champion (Vergeer) subsequently broke Koot’s serve in the eighth game to wrap up the set and sealed her victory.
Following her victory Vergeer said, “After winning fourteen NEC Masters titles I really feel like this is my tournament as I’ve won it so many times in the Netherlands, so (I’m) very happy to win the first one here in Belgium”.
When all was said and done, Vergeer managed to add yet another winner’s silverware to her haul.
