Estimate triumphs for the Queen in Gold Cup – Horseracing News
Estimate made the Queen proud by winning the Gold Cup (Group 1) at Ascot by only a neck distance.
The four-year-old filly was rated as the favourite to succeed and did not disappoint her owners in the end. This was her second consecutive victory at Ascot, as she had won another event here last year, which shows that she really
enjoys racing on this track.
Since the overall distance to cover in the race was more than 2 miles, no one was expecting a close finish. However, there was immense pressure on the front runners towards the final few yards, but Estimate ended up on top in the
end.
Sir Michael Stoute, who has succeeded with numerous stallions at Ascot, was pleased with the performance of his winning filly. He stated, “She showed a lot of courage and was always in a lovely position. She switches off so well.
It's a great thrill and honour as we know how much she [the Queen] loves the game.”
On the other hand, jockey Ryan Moore was also satisfied with his performance and claimed that it was an honour to win a race for the Queen. He went onto say that there was no pressure on him from the start until the end, as he
was positive that his runner will stay comfortably.
Estimate has now improved her overall record to four race victories out of seven. She did a fantastic job during the 2012 season, but things have been working even better this year, as she has remained unbeaten until now. It will
be important for her to continue winning with consistency in order to comeback next time around and defend her Gold Cup title.
Although the victorious filly deserves to be praised, the runner up challenger Simenon made his camp proud too. He ran one of the best races of his career and almost managed to make history.
His trainer Willie Mullins had mixed emotions after the race and stated and said that he was both ‘pleased and disappointed’. He went onto say, “The stands erupted, you could see everyone wanting to get to the front to see, and
I'm sure it's a very good result for racing. He's run a career-best.”
Simenon has been unable to win any event for quite some time now and he definitely needs to lift his performance in order to break the shackles.
