Estonia v Spain at Corfu – European Championship Division Two Twenty20 (Group A) – Match Update
Led by Tariq Ali’s massive unbeaten century, Spain clinched an easy 125-run win over Estonia during their European Championship Division Two Twenty20 Group A match, played on September 4 at Maessonghi on the Grecian island of Corfu.
Spain stepped up to bat first, and despite the repeated attempts of Estonia’s Sivalingham Arunachalam (4-0-31-3), the team managed to post a sizeable total of 218.
Armaghan Khan (38) and Tariq Ali (150*) opened the innings for their side, and their 100-run opening stand got the team off to a solid start. Armaghan Khan was dismissed by Moshiur Rahman but Tariq Ali powered on, going for one boundary after another (he hit a total of 5 fours and 16 sixes, with a strike rate of 227.27), and establishing a 56-run stand with wicketkeeper batsman James http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707 (4).
The remainder of the batting order was unable to contribute anything beyond meagre single-digit scores. Farhat Mahmood chipped in with 6 runs before he was sent back to the pavilion, lbw, by Murali Obili, while Tanveer Iqbal (9) took part in a 24-run partnership with Tariq Ali before he was run out by Karel http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Robert-Cowdrey-c60631 Buuren.
Talat Nadeem (0) and Sajad Ali (2) were both dismissed by Arunachalam, and by the end of 20 overs, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tariq-Ali-c92775 and Christian Munoz-Mills (2) at the crease, Spain finished with a total of 218 at the expense of 6 wickets.
Estonia, however, did not even come close as a combined bowling effort from Spain saw them cut off at 93 by the end of 20 overs.
Rahman (18) and skipper Tim Heath (40) remained the only batsmen who managed to reach double-digit scores, while two batsmen (Obili and Timothy Filer) were dismissed on duck. The Spanish bowling attack was spearheaded by Sajad Ali, who took 3 for 17. Armaghan http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khan-c71319, Talat Nadeem, and Tanveer Iqbal all managed to claim two wickets each.
Unable to withstand the assault, Estonia crumbled at a feeble 93 by the end of 20 overs, with 9 wickets down, conceding a 125-run defeat which saw Spain earning two match points.
