Ethernet cable is not connected??

Question

my ps3 is saying that an ethernet cable is not hooked up. should i hook it up to my laptop or to a modem/router(its a Motorola SBG900 surfboard so i dont know if it will work)

If you hook it to a modem you can't hook anything else up at the same time.  If you want a computer and the PS3 to work at the same time you'll need a router.  (Definitely not to your computer.)
