Ethernet instead of USB?

I own a Motorola SB5100 Cable Modem. On the back it has an Ethernet port and a USB port. I have been using a USB cord to receive our internet to our computer. Now, I would like to use an Ethernet cord instead of using the USB cord. But when I connect the Ethernet cable to the computer, and unplug the USB cable and try to refresh a web page, it says "Problem Loading Page" or something similar to that. How would I get internet through the Ethernet cord? Time Warner Cable provides our internet.

  1. You can't just swap the cables when the computer is on and you are on the internet. Switch off, swap cables, restart.

  2. Uninstall the usb software.  Turn of your computer disconnect the power from your modem.  Plug the modem back in and wait until the lights settle then connect the ethernet cable to the modem and pc then turn on the pc and it should detect automatically.

  3. Did you reset your modem after making the swap?  They aren't very clever devices, and you usually need to reset them when you swap interfaces like that.

  4. you may have to turn the modem off.....unplug it,leave it sit for a minute then try using it again.....or if it has a rest switch try that also.....1 more thing, do you have a driver installed for your ethernet card? you can check in the device manager....if you see a ? mark or a yellow symbol after it you dont have drivers installed for it....if you need the drivers, go to the manufactures site and download the newest drivers they have for your ethernet card........scott
