Question:

Ethernet or wireless?

I am going to hook up a wireless router in my living room when I get cable internet next week, and my computer is about 40 feet from the router indoors, through 1 wall. Should I hook up my xbox 360 through my computer using a pci wireless adapter or run a 100 foot ethernet cable to my 360? I mainly want to know which one will result in the least lag during online play.

thanks

  1. Use the cable

Much less lag and lower chance of you internet disconnecting right as your in the middle of the game

only thing to worry about is the cable looking untidy or scruffy

  2. Wireless is much better if you have portable devices such as iphoe, wii, xbox ect...

  3. You will always get better connection and reliability through a wired ethernet cable.  If there is a lot of wireless traffic, such as another computer or laptop on the next work, you will get poor performance if everything is going.  Modern WiFi works in the same way that hubs used to work.  Also if you don't mind looking at it or tripping over it if it is in the way I will still do wired.

Even with the best wireless cards, APs, and routers out there today you still run the chance of interference which can lead to disconnection.  There is nothing more frustrating that leading in the game only to get disconnected because someone next door to you just switched their wifi signal to your same channel.

  4. the 100 foot cable will produce the least lag for the xbox 360.

  5. id go with wireless my 360 is in the basement and it works fine going through the floor and by the microwave and i guess microwaves interfere with it but not mine

    good luck

  6. Like the previous post mentioned, wired internet is faster, more secure and more reliable, but aesthetically I would personally hate to have a 40 foot wire going through my rooms!

So get wireless and it'll save you so much trouble

  7. use the cable. when i had wireless i got disconnected from the internet every 5 minutes. got very annoying and agrivating. better safe than sorry. i ahve the cable now and works perfect

  8. There won't be "lag" with wifi but it may not work all the time.  Eithernet is always physically connected and doesn't have interference from wireless phones, microwaves, etc. but wires don't look that good and can be agravating.

I'd get a wireless router and try it.  If you have trouble, try changing channels and if neccecary, go wired.

Put your wireless router as high up as you can and as far from electrical and metal things as you can, that'll give you the best coverage.  Try to put it in the middle of where you expect to be (usually the middle of the house).  If you have 2.4GHz cordless phones you may want to replace them with 5.8GHz, 900MHz, or the new DECT6.0 phones that won't cause interference.  Also, wireless video senders, or wireless cameras that run on 2.4GHz should be set to the farthest channel from your router (e.g. set video sender to 1 or A and put the router on channel 11).

  9. no matter what Ethernet gives you the highest speed always as its physically connected.

  10. Wired ethernet would be the fastest, but frankly I don't think you'd have to much of an issue with wireless. Just make sure to secure it with a password so no one piggybacks on your connection.

  11. Follow Reds' answer, he is right on the money.

  12. Well, wired will result in less lag because there's no obstruction like walls but the difference isn't that much depending on your internet connection. I still like wireless because you're not tied down and you can use it on other devices like PSP, iphone, laptops etc.
