  1. What you need is an Ethernet switch.  You can get something like this one:

Connect switch to router, then computers to switch.  Simple.

WOW - nice spelling on my last edit - who invited the cool kid?

Oh my, I believe I know what is going one now. Vongae provides a "one port router" known as the Vonage V Portal. Its essentially an inline device that actupre the VoIP data packets and lets the rest through. Who kewn you culd build a one port router?!?!

Anyway, thats not a problem. What we ahve all been saying still holds true. Simply get a router and toss the Vonage device behind it. Here is a sample setup from Vonage.

I have seen this on a couple of client setups - they hang the Vonage device off the router. No problems!

A router already has more than one Ethernet port on it, so I am going to assume that you are talking about your modem.

The modem is the unit the connects the line from the street (DSL/Cable) to your computer. Usually the company you have service with gives you the modem when you sign up (or charges you).

That has one wire coming in from the wall and one wire going into your computer.

What you want is indeed a router. If you get one your choices are wired or wireless. I recommend a wireless router, since it ALSO has wired ports on the back as well. Why limit yourself now? You may get a laptop, or perhaps freinds/family will come over with one.

Anyway, most people use a 4-port router (they also come in 8-port, 16-port, even more). They are about $40-$60 at your local electronics store (Best Buy, Staples, CC, etc.) even Walmart sells them.

Routers work WITH your modem, not IN PLACE of it. they are pretty easy to set up, just read the instructions first - many come with a nice step by step poster.

Popular brands are Linksys, Netgear, and Belkin.

    Hope this helps!

(P.S. - caps weren't meant to yell, just to emphasize since we can't BOLD on this)

  3. You need to buy a Linksys or Netgear Switch (4, 5 or 8 ports switches run for around $40 - $50)  Checkout Tigerdirect - http://www.tigerdirect.com or Newegg - http://www.newegg.com

Those can split your internet between multiple computers.

  4. If you really do have a router than you just need a 4 port switch that you'd connect to the router and configure the router to do DHCP.

Your modem would connect to the router WAN port and the 4 port switch would connect to the LAN port of your router with the other end connected to the Uplink port of the switch (if there's an uplink port, if not it should still work fine)

  5. Here's a quick fix.  Get an ethernet hub from Best Buy or similar store.  They cost less than $60 for a 4 port hub.  You plug the hub into the uplink router port (the sales person can show you) and then plug your computers into the other ports on the hub.

Long term solution.  Look into getting a wireless router and installing wireless cards in your computers.

    Have fun!  Mistress Dolly

  6. I believe what you are referring to as the router is actually a "modem." If you buy what is called a Hub or Switch, those can split your internet between multiple computers.
