Ethernet switch instead of a router?

can i use an ethernet switch to go directly from my cable modem to 2 computers and an xbox? i want all the computers to have access to the internet at any time. thanks

Yes, you can use either but with a switch you cannot go wireless!  You might to get a wireless router instead.
