Ethnology...what are some jobs?

  1. Don't forget the possibility of working at a university.  There are more opportunities to be a professor in sociocultural anthropology than the other anthropological subfields (archaeology, linguistic and physical anthropology).  Also some ethnographers are employed by government agencies such as the National Park Service.


  2. Writing journals and selling them.

  3. Simply doing ethnographic studies of cultures, you're not going to find a whole lot outside of maybe your graduate work.

    Applying ethnographic information to help indigenous peoples around the world, well, there are many NGO's (non governmental organizations) that you could work for; there's a possibility that you could get hired by a large company looking to begin business in a different country, etc.

    The APPLIED side of it is what you're likely to find more work in.  Using your training as an anthropologist to help solve problems affecting indigenous peoples worldwide.  If that sounds interesing to you, go for it!

    EDIT:  Whoops, used "ethnography" rather than "ethnology."  I think the answer still applies tho.
