My family has to attend a graduation party for my wife's mothers, sisters, 2nd husbands son. Basically my wifes, aunts husbands son. We will be driving 400 miles 1 way to go too this and driving back the same day. We will give him a card but, how much $ do we give? I don't even know this guy and he is graduated from college.

  1. $20 seems enough if you don't know him well.

    Hope that helps

  2. I think that no more than $20 is generous considering that you do not know the person and are traveling a far distance.  Don't expect a thank you note because now a days some (not all) graduates have no problem cashing your check and you never get a thank you about it.

  3. between $ 50 to $100

  4. I'd say around $25 bucks would be appropriate if you can afford it.  If not, just you being there is enough to show your congratulations.

  5. Give what you can afford and don't worry about it. He probably doesn't know you very well either and should be happy that you bothered to travel that far to congratulate him. Don't feel defensive if it doesn't seem like too much, you are there to celebrate with the family, gift giving is not obligatory.

  6. My husband and I have decided that if we spend a lot to travel, the gift will probably be less as we can't afford both.  I am a wiener and if I don't know the people involved in a big event, I am unwilling to travel so far.  I would rather not travel an send a better gift.  But if you are willing to go see family...so this guy is about your age?  What can you afford?  $25 seems plenty
