The donkey groaned so the mule said to him "Why are you complaining? If you gave me one sack, I would have twice as many as you; if I gave you one of my sacks, then we would have equal loads." please help me! the project is not due until monday, but i would love it if i could get an answer to the question today!

  1. let donkey have d sacks and mule have m sacks of apples.

    If you gave me one sack, I would have twice as many as you;

    m + 1 = 2(d - 1)

    if I gave you one of my sacks, then we would have equal loads.

    m - 1 = d + 1

    m = d + 2

    (d+2) + 1 = 2d - 2

    d + 3 = 2d - 2

    d = 5

    m = d + 2 = 7

    answer : donkey carried 5 sacks and monkey(?) carried 7 sacks.

  2. My guess is that the Donkey is carrying 7 sacks and the Mule 5.

    If the Donkey takes one of the Mules sacks the Donkey would then have 8 and the Mule only 4. Therefore the Donkey would have twice as many as the mule. If the Donkey gives a sack to the Mule the mule would then have 6 sacks (5+1=6). The donkey would then have 6 sacks as well as (7-1=6), so they would be equal. Hope this helps and makes sense =)
