Eugenie Bouchard beats the injury-stricken Samantha Stosur in round three – Family Circle Cup 2013
World number 114, Eugenie Bouchard, won the third round clash against the 29-year-old Aussie, Samantha Stosur, with the combination of luck and power play at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. She won the opening set with a commanding
score line of 6-1 and was leading the scores 2-0 in the second phase of the game when the ninth ranked Aussie retired from the contest with a calf strain.
Bouchard stated in a post-match press interview, “I was really excited to get out there and I felt like I played really well - it's unfortunate that she had to retire. I thought she was serving pretty well, but we had some points
where she wasn't running for the balls. I thought the court was pretty slippery out there so I kind of didn't run for some of the balls either, but she had like big tape on her leg, and I saw that. It's much better to win with a full match, but I'm excited
to be here for tomorrow.”
The opening game of the match lasted more than 10 minutes. It was the Canadian teenager who was serving the first game of the contest and she lost it after a gruelling battle. However, the immediate reply helped her to register
a comeback and equalize the scores at 1-1. From that point of the contest, it was all about the 19-year-old Canadian who showed no mercy at all to the third seed Aussie and demolished her completely before Stosur withdrew.
Stosur fought hard in the fourth game of the match to keep the game alive but she failed to do so despite playing five deuces. She trailed the scores 1-3 at that stage and the next four points were pocketed by the Canadian that
boosted her lead to 4-1.
The former US Open Champion couldn’t absorb the pressure and lost four straight points that posted a resounding lead of 5-1 for the Canadian who wrapped up the opening set with a blistering winner down the line. The second set
featured a terrible slip from Stosur who injured her calf and withdrew after losing the first two games as she couldn’t play through pain.
Jelena Jankovic and Eugenie Bouchard will play against one another in the following round.
