Eugenie Bouchard upsets Samantha Stosur in the third round – Family Circle Cup 2013
Another upset was seen at the Family Circle Cup when the 19-year-old Canadian youngster, Eugenie Bouchard, overwhelmed the world number nine, Samantha Stosur, in the third round’s play. The 114th ranked teenager barely
took 47 minutes to wrap up the contest with an assertive score line of 6-1, 2-0, to stun everyone present at the outdoor hard courts of Charleston, USA.
No one was expecting the Australian number one, Stosur, to fall so cheaply at the hands of a 19-year-old underdog opponent. However, it was an overall brilliance from Bouchard which took the Aussie veteran by surprise. Stosur could
win merely one game in the entire matchup and was brutally manhandled by the Canadian. It was the first meeting between these two contestants and perhaps it was the reason why the third seeded Aussie couldn’t meet the game play of Bouchard. Stosur wasn’t playing
at her best and that is why she eventually had to pull out of the contest after losing the first two games of the second set due to injury.
Bouchard defeated the 16th seed British tennis prodigy, Laura Robson, after a stiff battle in the second round of the tournament but Stosur proved to be easier bait for her. The Canadian teenager was really ecstatic
on her huge victory over a Top-10 player and desires to carry on her sublime run of form to bag her maiden WTA championship title at this venue.
"I was really excited to get out there and I felt like I played really well - it's unfortunate that she had to retire," Bouchard said after the match. "I thought she was serving pretty well, but we had some points where she wasn't
running for the balls. I thought the court was pretty slippery out there so I kind of didn't run for some of the balls either, but she had like big tape on her leg, and I saw that. It's much better to win with a full match, but I'm excited to be here for tomorrow."
Bouchard will take on the former world number one, Jelena Jankovic, in the next round to fight for a place in the semi-finals of the Family Circle Cup.
