Eukaryotic ribosomes are made up of two subunits, one called 60S and one called 40S. These subunits themselves are made of tRNA and protein. Ribosomes in prokaryotic cells are also composed of two subunits each made of rRNA and protein, but the subunits are made of smaller rRNA and different protein molecules, and are called 30S and 50S. Chloramophenicol is a chemical that binds to the 50S subunit of a ribosome and stops the formation of a peptideyl transferase. Streptomycinchanges the shape of the 30S rRNA so mRNA cannot be read correctly. We call both streptomycin and chloramphenicol antibiotics.
Explain why these chemicals are so effective in treating bacterial infections while not affecting human cells.
thanks so much!!! :)
