Euro 2012: Last gasp McManus saves Scotland’s blushes
Stephen McManus headed a winner seven minutes into stoppage time as a relieved Scotland edged to a dramatic 2-1 win over Liechtenstein at Hampden Park.
Defender McManus rose to head home a Barry Robson corner right at the death, on a night where the Scots had been booed off at half time in boss Craig Levein’s first competitive home match in charge.
Things were soon to get worse for the home side right at the start of the second period, when Liechtenstein skipper Mario Frick curled home from just inside the box to open the scoring.
With an unthinkable defeat looming, Kenny Miller smashed home an equaliser shortly after the hour mark, and with Scotland dominating, McManus sent the home fans wild with his late intervention.
Elsewhere, things were a little smoother for the Republic of Ireland, as they beat minnows Andorra 3-1 in the first competitive international at the new Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Kevin Kilbane headed the hosts in front, and things were going very much to plan when forward Kevin Doyle fired in a brilliant second shortly before half time.
However, there was still time in the half for Cristian Martinez to stun Dublin with a long range strike that halved the deficit.
Normal service was resumed in the second half though, and Robbie Keane lofted a third over Andorra ‘keeper Jose Antonio Gomes to confirm the win.
