Euro 2012: Negative Scots beaten in Prague
Czech Republic 1 Scotland 0
An overly cautious Scotland slipped to a 1-0 defeat to the Czech Republic in Prague, as their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012 took a severe blow.
Craig Levein’s side were reluctant to attack their hosts, who almost took the lead in the first half when captain Tomas Rosicky drove an effort wide from the edge of the penalty area.
With the Scots sitting back in numbers, it took the introduction of West Bromwich Albion striker Roman Bednar – who used to play in Scotland with Hearts – to cause genuine problems in the visiting defence, and the forward flicked on a free kick to allow Roman Hubnik to power home the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining.
Bednar twice went close to extending his side’s lead, but Scotland struggled to create anything and, despite the late introductions of Chris Iwelumo and the controversially omitted Kenny Miller, slipped to a disappointing loss.
It doesn’t get any easier for them next either, as world champions Spain come to Hampden Park on Tuesday.
