Euro 2012 News: United’s English star Rio Ferdinand in doubt for captaincy
Troubling times for Manchester United’s star defender Rio Ferdinand continue as the centre back is rumoured to lose his starting line up position for England.
There have been contradictory and teasing statements by the Three Lions’ boss Fabio Capello who has reportedly stated that he might just go ahead and play his old combinations for defending, without the addition of Ferdinand in the squad.
According to media reports the England manager Fabio Capello has stated that he might just progress with the players he has been playing since previous matches. That actually will be a prudent move as they have been in outstanding form and proved that the
next generation of not as hopeful as the pundits had predicted.
In the first match against Bulgaria, England defeated them 4-0 and in the second they thwarted Switzerland 3-1. While most of their star players had failed to appear or perform in the fixtures, it were the new choices of the Italian manager that helped Three
Lions in these victories.
Now because of all this Ferdinand will have to face jeopardy as this lack of play might lose him the captaincy of England. Earlier in February before the FIFA 2010 World Cup had begun the Italian manager had handed the captaincy responsibilities to Ferdinand
who is also the skipper of Manchester United (or at least was before lady luck deserted him).
After his knee injury the career of Ferdinand spiralled downwards. Over the past year and a half the English super star has constantly faced injury troubles which have deteriorated his form. But that is just part of the story; just before the World Cup he
injured his knee in a training session when team mate Emile Heskey tackled him.
This didn’t just make him lose his captaincy but also a permanent spot on the team. In the Euro 2012 qualifiers Capello chose the Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard to lead the English team and he has delivered fine results since then.
Before Ferdinand resurfaced for the team he announced that he would like to retain the captaincy position even after the arrival of Ferdinand. In response to that the 64 year old manager said that the issue will be resolved once the player has returned.
Just recently after the arrival of Ferdinand, Capello stated that the original captaincy position would sustain. Media reports have pictured that Capello will believe in the previous defensive pair of John Terry and Phil Jagielka. The duo have hugely impressed
in their recent matches.
Now that the match against the best team in their Group Montenegro is approaching, Capello has still not made up his mind as to who will he use in his final line up.
Nonetheless it s expected that Jagielka will be preferred to Ferdinand who is just started his comeback and if that happens Capello will have no choice but to continue with Gerrad as captain.
