Europa League Full Time Report: Sampdoria vs. PSV Eindhoven – PSV come from behind to claim victory
PSV travelled all the way to Sampdoria to take on the team that had managed to go on and draw with Italian giants AC Milan, this past weekend. PSV were well aware of the fact that Sampdoria were one of the hardest teams to face in their home, however the
Dutch team were willing to take their chances and after going down by one goal, the team managed to pull a dramatic come back and go on to win by two goals to one.
Giampaolo Pazzini was the player to put the home team ahead in the first half. However a spirited display in the second half by PSV saw them equalize on the fifty first minute via Ola Toivonen. The player then went on to grab the equalizer in the dying stages
of the game to help secure the win for the visitors.
One of the most notable facts about the opening forty five minutes was that the stadium lost its power for nearly eight minutes, during which the play had to be held up. However the home team seemed unaffected by the loss of power as they went on to break
the deadlock almost immediately after the restart.
Sampdoria broke on the counter and Reto Ziegler crossed in a brilliant ball that Pazzini managed to guide right into the far top corner of the goal, to give the home side the lead. There wasn't much that the PSV keeper could do about that as the header was
placed to perfection.
However in the second half PSV managed to turn on a little something extra. The team increased their tempo and pace and were rewarded almost immediately after the restart. Ibrahim Afellay was the player who managed to meet Toivonen's head with a pin point
cross and the attacker managed to bullet the ball into the back of the net with his head.
Nonetheless with just a minute left on the clock it was Toivonen once again who provided the magic. The player unleashed a strike from twelve yards out as he beat the Sampdoria keeper by placing his shot towards the left of the post.
That was one of the last plays of the game, as the match ended with PSV picking up the win in the very last minute of play.
