Europa League Roundup - 22nd Oct 2010
It was an exciting night of continental football as Manchester City registered their second win in the competition while Rapid Vienna, Sevilla, Metalist Kharkiv and Porto also claimed priceless wins.
Liverpool, however, were not amongst the lucky ones last night as they were held to a goal less draw in Naples by Napoli.
Liverpool have been hopelessly out of form in recent weeks and the decision to leave stars like Gerrad and Torres wasn't welcomed by the fans but the young reds put up a brave performance in Naples as they maintained their unbeaten record in the group but
had to be content with only a 0-0 draw.
Over in Manchester, Emanuel Adebayor was the hero for the Citizens, grabbing a hat trick as his side beat the Polish side, Lech Poznan.
Poznan had led the group table going into the match but City were a class apart last night as Adebayor opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he converted a through ball from Patrick Vieira.
On 25 minutes, Adebayor scored again, converting a cross from David Silva but the visitors equalized through Joel Tshibamba, just after the break to stun the home crowd.
But, the Togo international made the three points safe, thus becoming the only Manchester City player to score a hat trick in Europe when he scored his third of the night on 73 minutes.
Over in Portugal, FC Porto gave a performance and came out of the match as 3-1 victors. Falcao scored the first and Hulk grabbed a brace for the hosts on the night while Bobo could only manage a consolation goal for his side late in the game.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Steffen Hofmann kept alive the hopes of Rapid Vienna as goals from the duo helped their side register their first win in the competition.
PSV also registered a win on the night as they beat Debreceni 2-1 in Eindhoven to cement their position at the top of group I of the Europa League.
Jonathan Reis scored the winner for the home side after Orlando Engelaar and Mirsad Mijadinoski had cancelled each other’s strikes in the match.
Also, in the same group, Metalist Kharkiv, despite being 1 man down, came out winners over Sampdoria by 2 goals to 1. Cleiton Xavier scored the winner for the Ukrainians as they registered their first win in the group.
Over in group K, FC Utrecht and Steau Bucharest had to be content with only a point each as none of the sides seized the initiative on the night. Alje Schut and Edouard Duplan were the scorers for their respective sides.
PSG also remained in control of their group as Clement Chantome grabbed a late equalizer for the French side at Stade De Garland to cancel out Nuri Sahin's early penalty. Fredrick Kanote grabbed the solitary goal in the game against Karpaty Lviv as Sevilla
beat the Ukrainian side in Spain.
