Europe on top of world golf: Colin Montgomerie
The triumphant captain of Europe’s Ryder Cup team Colin Montgomerie stated that Europe is now the leading power in the golfing world. The player further added that European players won major championships in 2010 and the Ryder Cup win made it a fantastic
year for them so far. With his poised declaration, Monty also predicted that China would have their first number one player within a decade.
Colin, whose team regained the Ryder Cup by winning over the United Sates at Celtic manor, said Europe is definitely ahead of other continents in golf. Even European golfer Lee Westwood is replacing golf’s top cat Tiger Woods on the 31st of October.
Westwood will end Woods five and a half year reign as the world’s number one golfer. Monty was also labelled as the master planner and the motivating force that propelled the Europeans to a nail biting victory in Wales a few days back. Along with Westwood,
Martin Kaymer is also making his way to the top. After winning the Dunhill Links, the German player is now number four in the world.
"We've always bowed to America's dominance in the world rankings," Montgomerie said in Hong Kong. "But we've had a fantastic year in Europe and that dominance is now changing. Colin said that there is an alteration of the guard towards the European Tour
and Europe. The 47 year also retracted his statement saying that the supremacy might not last for long as Asian golfers are making headlines in golf.”
When inquired whether Chinese players had the ability to become the number one in golf, Monty quickly agreed and said that he would actually be surprised if an Asian player didn’t make it to the top. Since Colin was at Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club
for the annual HSBC Champions Charity Golf Day, he said that looking at the work ethic here; there is no question about that. Monty complimented by saying that he has seen how hard the Koreans worked and practice on golf. He especially acknowledged the women
golfers and their game.
Along with praising his own side, he also commented that he did expect Tiger to react on being replaced as the world’s best player. Being the top player for five years is definitely a huge honour. Colin also hinted that Tiger won’t like the number two status
and will definitely try to earn it back.
Montgomerie himself is tied for 41st slot at the Dunhill Championship and really wants to win a European Tour event again. With the passion Monty and the Europeans have, this doesn’t look like a difficult task to achieve.
