Europe shines again, three golfers nominated for 2011 Laureus World Sports Award
If you are one of those sharp-eyed golfing fans then the emerging European threat probably hasn’t escaped your observation.
With the continent literally leading every ranking and every list in golf, the European team has now eyed the 2011 Laureus World Sports Award for their remarkable record of triumphs.
The award ceremony would be held next month in Abu Dhabi, Monday, the 7th of February
“There are seven Europeans in the top 11 of the world rankings and if that makes any difference, then the quality of the European field is extremely high”, said English golfer, Paul Casey, ranked 8th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
According to recent reports, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen and Matteo Manassero have been chosen as nominees for the Laureus World Sports Awards. They are a stark mixture of youth and experience. Between them they hold the 2010 Ryder Cup victory and some impressive Major triumphs.
On an individual basis, Kaymer holds a US PGA Championship win from last year and is aiming to lead the Race to Dubai from The European Tour.
As for Manassero, the 17-year-old has managed to alter many record books. After stepping into the professional cult, Manassero played the Masters Tournament to earn his card for this year’s brawl and managed to grab a two-year exemption after winning the Castello Masters in October.
Along with Kaymer, Oosthuizen and Manassero, who are Open Champions, stand as a viable consideration for the 'Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year' section as well.
The earlier stated section includes the likes of French athletes, Christophe Memaitre and Teddy Tamgho and German World Cup footballer, Thomas Muller along with the golfing contenders.
From the team category, Colin Montgomerie's squad joins the nominated cult along with several other teams of various sports.
The 'Laureus World Team of the Year' category thus includes the likes of the New Zealand All Blacks, Inter Milan FC, Los Angeles Lakers basketball team, Red Bull Formula One team and Spain's World Cup football side to stand beside Monty’s team.
The European group has the record of earning a thrilling victory over team United States last year at the 2010 Ryder Cup. The team won the trophy at The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales and has also managed to grab the BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year trophy from the awards circuit.
