European Club Championships: Ernesto Velazquez intercepts Henrik Toth in Men’s Singles encounter
Ernesto Velazquez of CB Soderinsa Rinconada-Sevilla club waylaid Henrik Toth in match against Multi Alarm SE badminton club in European Club Championships on May 29, 2012.
Both shuttlers made this contest memorable by fighting in court for 51 minutes and ended this battle with 21-13, 19-21 and 21-12 scores on the board.
Ernesto doubled the lead of his team by winning first and last games of the match while his opponent Henrik, despite of establishing grip in the middle, could not make best out of this contest.
The first set saw higher ranked Ernesto in prime touch as he completely dominated in all areas of game by exhibiting brilliant craft on the court.
The Spanish shuttler got into commanding position with some nonstop rallies and put his competitor under great pressure.
Ernesto reached at formidable margin of 11 until mid-game break and entered in later part of the set as leading contestant.
He maintained this momentum in final stage of the game also and raised his lead to eight points. This deficit proved final blow for Henrik as he knelt down after reading final total of 13-21.
However, the Hungarian player stood tall in next game and turned his rival’s plan of straight-set victory into dust.
Henrik was bit cautious in start as his challenger was enjoying psychological dominance due to first set win but he gained confidence later with some consecutive points.
In the first half of the set, Ernesto tried to capitalise his 1-0 lead by making a swift progress on scoreboard but he could not go with same flow as the opposing campaigner put his expedition to halt.
Both contenders remained toe-to-toe in second half also and stood equal until last shot was played.
However, Henrik managed to end this race by entering a concluding margin of 21-19 in his favour.
Third and final set was supposed to be a cliff-hanging tussle but unexpectedly it turned one-sided affair.
Ernesto Velazquez, who won bronze medal in 2007 European Junior Badminton Championships, served notice of his supremacy by wrapping the show with a significant figure of 21-12.
This win boosted confidence of his club-mates as they sealed a splendid 5-2 win later.
