European Club Championships: Michelle Li, Dimitria Popstoykova start their marathon with a bang
Women’s Doubles team Michelle Li-Dimitria Popstoykova bagged opening match against Tenzin Pelling-Agnia Ruhanda in European Club Championships on May 29, 2012.
This 43-minute fight was fourth segment of the encounter between Diesse Mediterranea club and BV St. Gallen-Appenzell club.
The concluding figures of 23-21, 17-21 and 15-21 gave Diesse Mediterranea’s fans a solid reason to celebrate.
Though, the twosome of Tenzin-Agnia from BV St. Gallen-Appenzell took off in right manner but they crashed in following two games as Michelle-Dimitria played superior badminton at the death.
First game proved just curtain raiser of a splendid show as both teams employed brilliant skills and made the spectators gasp.
They remained toe-to-toe in most part of set and game was on knife’s edge until game point situation.
In the beginning, the Swiss girls Tenzin and Agnia made a swift charge and gained a decent advantage. They carried this momentum all the way to mid-game break and hit the benches as leading team with total of 11.
After the interval, Michelle-Dimitria also accelerated their pace and caught their challengers before the end of third quarter.
Both teams played three game points but Tenzin-Agnia managed to pocket opening set with nail-biting result of 23-21.
However, the story was different in next chapter of this saga as Swiss shuttlers got pale due to an intensive attack of opposing couple.
Michelle and Dimitria, who belong to Canada and Bulgaria respectively, did not give any counter attack opportunity and dominated from very first shot to last one.
They established an irrefutable lead in the start with some consecutive points and managed to enter a notable total of 11 before one-minute break was announced.
Later part of the set saw them struggle a bit as their competitors narrowed the gap with some nonstop rallies but they picked up their speed and finished this race with a significant margin of 21-17.
The decider turned consequential but the twosome of Michelle and Dimitria forged a fruitful chemistry to secure the honour.
They wrapped the show by remaining six steps ahead in final figure of 21-15 and earned a vital point for their team.
