European Tour golfer of the month – Miguel Angel Jimenez
After a successful European Tour, Miguel Angel Jimenez was named golfer of the month. Jimenez was presented with the award in recognition of his record-breaking win at the Hong Kong Open. It was not just a victory, it was more than that.
His triumph at the UBS Hong Kong Open meant that he became the oldest player on the European Tour to win a title.
The Spaniard defeated Sweden's Frederik Andersson by the slightest of the margins last month. Andersson just fell one stroke short of Angel, it was Spaniard's third victory in Hong Kong.
Jimenez won the Hong Kong Open back in 2005 and 2008.
It was not just a victory, in fact, it was a special one as he carded a magnificent round of 65 on the final day to secure his title. Jimenez's round was a treat to watch as he pounded birdie after birdie.
It was Jimenez’s 19th title on the European Tour in his 597th outing, this was one big achievement for the veteran.
"To win a tournament on The European Tour, given the growing standard out there, is hard enough at the best of times, but to do it at almost 49 years of age is remarkable”, said Michael Harris.
The competition for the award was very tough as there were the likes of Rory McIlroy who won the DP World Tour Championship and Luke Donald who won in Japan.
"But Miguel is just that, remarkable. He is an entertainer and has such an infectious love of life and golf that I know a lot of people have been inspired to take up the game just by watching the fun he has on the course”.
"His win in Hong Kong against a high-quality field was fantastic and, as a result, he is a worthy winner of the award for November," said Harris who is a member of the voting panel.
Winning the title at the age of 48 and against a high-profile field takes something only a few players have. This not only proves the worth of the Spaniard, but also the fact that competition on the European Tour is extremely tough.
