European Tour joins forces with Schüco: a welcome respite from its financial vows

In order to minimize the financial vows coupled with the burgeoning concerns of environmental-friendly green technology, the European Tour has finally struck a deal with the Schüco, the Bielefeld-based specialist for green building technology, announced
by the Tour chief executive George O’ Grady on December 20. Schüco has now been included as the official supplier family and will work alongside the tour officials to formulate better planning and execution.
“Our cooperation with The European Tour will provide us with completely new possibilities for reaching the goals we have set ourselves.” Dirk U. Hindrichs, Schüco’s President and CEO, said.
Golf is often criticized for heavy usage of fertilizers and insecticides which leave an adverse effect on the ecology of the region in general. The fertilizers wash away with the rains and find their way to the rivers and canals, leaving disastrous chemicals
in the system. Insecticides and sprays, on the other hand, deliver severe blow to the bird population of the region as they are deprived of the larvae and other insects which they rely on as their basic supplements.
Schüco will not only help the tour in planning eco-friendly events and will provide with valuable suggestion on when and where the new courses should be built and what can the reasonable steps which can be taken to protect the environment.
“As sustainable issues become increasingly important for sport and golf in particular, we are delighted to work with Schüco and benefit from their expertise in this area. Schüco are world leaders in green technology and their understanding of golf and the
challenges of climate protection will be invaluable to The European Tour.” said George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour.
The deal is likely to boost the morale of the European Tour officials who have been struggling to meet the expenses of the tour as several of the lucrative sponsors have already left the tour. European Tour is currently looking for sponsors for the Irish
Open and the Scottish Open events. Barclays, the official sponsor for the Scottish Open, recently declined to extend its sponsorship deal for the event, leaving the future of the event in doldrums.
