European Universities Games: Alexander Roovers, Kim Buss seize Mixed Doubles title – Badminton News
Germany’s Alexander Roovers-Kim Buss remained invincible in final round of European Universities Games-Badminton Individual Tournament and raised the Mixed Doubles trophy on July 17, 2012.
They overpowered Stepan Yaroslavtsev-Anastasia Chervyakova in the title match by registering 21-17, 13-21 and 21-18 margin on the board.
This 43-minute battle was staged in Rafael Lozano badminton arena of Córdoba, Spain and both contenders made the crowd gasp with their staggering performance in three hard fought sets.
The duo prevailed in the opening and closing parts while the opposing team could rise only in the second set of the match.
In the opening game, Alexander-Kim laid the foundation of their supremacy by pocketing five consecutive points after 3-4 and then carried this momentum all the way to mid-game break.
They confined their rivals in the rear court with a power packed campaign and did not commit any mistakes in first half of the set. They entered the second half as leading contenders by putting decent total of 11-6.
Later part of the game saw Stepan-Anastasia making swift progress and reaching a fighting position of 17-15.
The Russian pair made every effort to claim first match point but they failed to go with same flow in crucial moments and surrendered after reading 17-21 margin.
However, they showed elevated craft in very next game and successfully avoided a straight-set defeat.
Despite a first set loss, their coordination was superb as they did not show any sign of confusion and played with great precision.
The twosome of Stepan-Anastasia, who was playing for University of N. Novgorod, established an unassailable lead straight away in the beginning and maintained the upper hand throughout the crucial game.
They gathered valuable points at a steady pace and finished first half with 11-5 total. They transformed this initial advantage into a mountainous figure of 21-13 at the end of the second set.
This 1-1 match score position made the third consequential and both teams put all they had to oust their opponent.
They remained toe-to-toe until third quarter of the set and neither could gain a comfortable advantage before 17-16.
Finally, Alexander-Kim managed to place a decisive figure of 21-18 and fetched Mixed Doubles title for University of D. Essen.
