European Universities Games: Sebastian Gransbo, Peder Nordin become Men’s Doubles Champions
Men’s Doubles title of European Universities Games-Badminton Individual Tournament belonged to Sebastian Gransbo-Peder Nordin as they thrashed Mikhail Loktev-Vadim Novoselov in title match on July 17, 2012.
This final tussle, held at Rafael Lozano badminton arena of Córdoba, Spain, was resolved in just 32 minutes but still both teams played their heart out to read concluding margin of 21-17 and 21-10.
The champion couple literally earned this straight-set victory as they had to overcome strong resistance of the opposing team.
Meanwhile, Sebastian and Peder showed great fighting spirit but luck was not on their side and they had to stay on the second step of victory stand.
In the opening game, both pairs made their intentions clear by putting a tremendous effort straight away in the beginning.
They chased each other all the way to half time and did not allow the opponent to establish a comfortable lead.
The Russian duo matched their superior rival’s skills and managed to stay close until 10-11 before the interval.
Sebastian and Peder, who were ranked second in this tournament, made up the difference with a couple of productive rallies after the break and reached a dominating position of 16-12.
At this stage, the opposing shuttlers mounted pressure by raising their total to 16-18 but the Swedish campaigners put their expedition to a halt and bagged the first match point with 21-17.
This striking knock boosted their confidence and they entered the second set with a psychological edge over their competitors.
On the other hand, Mikhail and Vadim could not lift the burden of this deficit and knelt down in crucial moments of the match.
Sebastian and Peder, who play for University of Stockholm, employed unbeatable craft and outclassed their challengers in all areas of game.
They built pressure by gaining a four-point advantage in 7-3 total and then doubled the impact by registering an indomitable figure of 11-5 before the one-minute break.
After the interval, they had to face bit trouble when their rivals snatched four consecutive points but this downfall was temporary as they reinstated their authority.
The Swedish couple ended this part of battle with 21-10 score and reserved right to be on top of victory stand.
