European Universities Games: Vadim Novoselov ousts William Goudallier in quarter-final round
Russia’s spirited shuttler Vadim Novoselov surged into Men’s Singles semi-finals of European Universities Games-Badminton Individual Tournament by stamping William Goudallier on July 16, 2012.
However, it was not a smooth ride to victory as he had to go all the way to three exhausting sets to read favourable result of 17-21, 21-18 and 21-18.
This hard fought quarter-final encounter was staged in Rafael Lozano badminton arena in Cordoba, Spain and it lasted for one hour and 14 minutes.
Vadim Novoselov, who is also eighth seeded player of the event, played with great conviction and stood full to his stature despite receiving a severe blow in the beginning.
Meanwhile, the French campaigner could not survive his intensive backlash and surrendered tamely.
The unseeded shuttler William Goudallier stunned his superior rival straight away in first set when he grabbed vital match point in a splendid manner.
Though, he was a bit confused in the opening part but couple of productive rallies boosted his confidence and he performed exceedingly well in final moments.
In first half, he was standing at fighting position of 8-11 until mid-game break but later part of the set saw him controlling overall pace of the rallies and reaching at dominating position of 15-13.
William did not lose this rhythm and finished opening game of the match with a decisive figure of 21-17.
However, the story was entirely different in second set as the higher ranked Russian shuttler showed elevated craft and brought the contest to the right balance.
Vadim, who is representing University of Saratov in this tournament, employed unusual tactics and kept the opposing shuttler under control throughout this crucial game.
He gathered valuable points at steady pace and put respectable total of 11-8 before the interval. He maintained this slight edge also in second half and levelled match score with 21-18.
The decider was also played in same manner as the French remained cautious in the start, thundered in middle and then blundered in the final moments of match.
On the other hand, Vadim Novoselov sealed his victory with 21-18 and setup a clash with German shuttler Lukas Schmidt in semi-final round of the tournament.
