European duo happy to take the lead at Masters – Masters News
The Masters started yesterday at the picturesque Augusta National in Georgia. As it was expected, there was a European charge after the first round concluded. Two Europeans top the leader board and share the lead.   
Youngster from Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros, both carded a round of seven-under par, 65. They were truly fantastic with their hitting on the firm fairways and it was also great with their stroke making on the fast greens.
This score certainly shows that both these players will look to continue their momentum in the next three rounds.
McIlroy took an early lead in the tournament, as he had an early tee off. This was his best start so far while playing in the Masters. Rory was exceptional with his iron hitting and was in complete momentum with his swing. He was bogey free for the day and
made seven birdies. This score card certainly shows that the youngster did not wary of the field which includes some big names.
Rory’s best finish here at the Masters was in 2009 where he finished tied for the 20th spot. It looked like he had a good read of the greens in the practice round. Rory took full advantage of his early morning tee off, as the conditions were suitable
for the players. There was a slight wind in the morning and it was a bright sunny day. This is his best opportunity now to maintain his lead through the next three rounds for capturing his first green jacket.
As for the Spaniard Quiros, he took full advantage of his long drive and was hitting the ball long off the fairways. Quiros in his last two outings here at the Masters failed to make the cut. He recently won the Dubai Desert Classic in February by one shot.
The 28-year-old impressed the crowd with his long drives.
Quiros was the longest driver for the first round, as his massive drives helped him post a superb round of seven-under par, 65. This is now an opportunity knocking at his door which he has to grab. He made eight birdies and only a single bogey. Quiros was
also holding off his putts on the fast greens at Augusta.
McIlroy is ranked at the ninth spot in the official world rankings. He will certainly be hoping to continue his game in the next three rounds to wear the green jacket for the first time. This will take some competitive play on the field, as players like
Y.E. Yang and K.J. Choi are right on his tail.
The Korean duo of Yang and Choi charged their way on the leader board. They share the second spot were five-under after the first day ended. They have a deficit of just two shots over the leader and are expected to take charge on the second day.
Both these leaders from Europe have certainly surprised the players on the course. The second round will continue today.
