European football round-up: PSV thrash Feyenoord 10-0
PSV Eindhoven are the team on everyone’s lips this morning after they demolished Feyenoord 10-0 at the weekend.
The Eredivisie leaders were ruthless against the 14-time Dutch champions, retaining their place at the top of the league table in the process. Few would have predicted that PSV would go on to record double figures against their struggling opponents at half-time. PSV led 2-0 at the break, and were a man up after Kelvin Leerdam was sent off, but scored eight second half goals to condemn Feyenoord to their worst ever defeat. An undoubted humiliation at the Philips Stadion.
There were far fewer goals scored in the most fearsome derby in Turkey, though - ten less, in fact. A relatively entertaining 0-0 draw between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray denied Gheorghe Hagi a victory in his first match in charge of the visitors.
Over in Spain’s Primera Liga, Cristiano Ronaldo stole the headlines after smashing four goals past Racing Santander in a 6-1 victory. José Mourinho’s side continue to impress and already boast a +18 goal difference. Just below them are Villarreal, who beat Atletico Madrid 2-0 at El Madrigal on Sunday evening, while Barcelona were bailed out by the imperious Lionel Messi yet again – the Argentina international scoring both goals in a 2-0 win.
Lazio are now four points clear in Serie A, following their 2-1 win against Cagliari. Sergio Floccari and Stefano Mauri grabbed the goals to keep the two-time Italian champions at the top of the league. But they owe a huge debt of gratitude to Sampdoria, who held Inter Milan to a 1-1 draw at the San Siro. Meanwhile, struggling AS Roma could only draw 0-0 with bottom side Parma, fuelling speculation that manager Claudio Ranieri will soon lose his job.
For romantics of the beautiful game, the most heartening result of the weekend took place in the Bundesliga, as Mainz climbed back to the top of the league table, thanks to a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen. With eight wins from their opening nine matches, the German club have shaken off their ‘minnows’ tag in recent weeks, and continue to go from strength to strength. It wasn’t a great weekend for Bayern Munich, though. A 0-0 draw against Hamburg on Friday evening leaves the Champions League finalists in 11th place.
And Lyon were dealt a similar blow in their bid to overcome a poor start in France’s Ligue 1, after failing to beat bottom side Arles. It appears that Claude Puel is on borrowed time in charge of Lyon, who are still languishing in 14th place. Marseille, though, are firmly back on track following their 3-1 away win against Lille. Now in second place, Didier Deschamps side are now just a point behind Rennes, who lost their first match of the season against Montpellier on Saturday.
