can you turn up at the eurotunnel and book tickets there and then to france?

If you are in a car, bus or truck, yes, but otherwise, no.  They do not run passenger services for people without vehicles.  If you are not traveling by road, then you buy a ticket with Eurostar, the train operator, and you go through the tunnel that way.  You can pick up the train in London, at St Pancras, or at Ashford International, in Kent.

I think you should book the tickets on the official site. It's much more safe, in the event of no room.

I know the thought of being stuck in a tunnel for over 30-45 minutes doesn't sound like heaven when you want fresh air and want to keep moving, but it's so nice because you can just sit in the car having fun, eating Burger King and playing car games. The translated voices as they read out the safety regulations. It's a highlight of the holiday to me.
