Eva Birnerova defeats Ekaterina Bychkova in straight sets at the qualifying final of Family Circle Cup
Eva Birnerova defeated Ekaterina Bychkova in easy straights during the final round of the qualifying singles for the 2011 Family Circle Cup. Birnerova, who hails from the Czech Republic, undid her Russian opponent in just one hour and twenty-five minutes
by defeating the player 6-3, 6-2. Birnerova then progressed to the first round of the main draw of the WTA Premier tournament.
Czech tennis pro Eva Birnerova has been part of the Women’s Tennis Association tour since 2002. She is a right-handed player, and has not won any titles despite her tenure on the WTA circuit. The player is currently ranked World Number 133, and is 26 years
old. She has played fifteen matches so far this year, and has lost nine of them.
Ekaterina Bychkova, who was born and lives in Moscow, Russia, has been a professional tennis player since 2000. The player, who is 25 years old, joined the WTA circuit almost eleven years ago, and is currently ranked World Number 212. She is also a right-handed
player, and has taken part in seven matches in 2011 (excluding this tournament). The player lost three of these matches and managed victories in the remaining four. She has not won a WTA career title so far.
The match was not a very exciting one, as Birnerova seemed singularly determined to qualify for the main draw. She could not score any aces during the match, but committed just two double faults. She also managed to save five of a total of seven break points,
while her opponent suffered under her attack as the Czech player converted six break points against her. All in all, Birnerova defeated Bychkova in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 by scoring a total of 57 per cent of the points in the match.
This is the fifth time that the two players have competed against each other. Their first match was in 2003 at Opole, where Birnerova scored her first victory over Bychkova by defeating the player in straight sets in the round of the last 16. She managed
to defeat her Russian opponent again in Moscow in 2005 in the qualifying rounds, but her luck seemed to run out in their next two meetings. Bychkova defeated Birnerova in the qualifying rounds at Paris in 2007, before scoring another victory over her at the
Petange semi-final in 2009. Their head-to-head score is now 3-2 to Eva Birnerova.
The Czech tennis player has now qualified for the main draw of the prestigious 2011 Family Circle Cup. Eva Birnerova will be taking on Hungarian tennis player Melinda Czink in the first round of the Charleston tournament.
