Eva Judkins ethnicity?

Eva Judkins was her name prior to marriage. She married a Pike. They had sons: Lawrence (my grandfather), Alanson, Richard, and Clarence. She also had a daughter Marguerite who was given to another family member to raise. She was born in VT (we know that). But, her descendants all knew she was Native American - Blackfeet told them. She had relatives in Maine that were living on what was called the reservation. I know from research, reservation is a loose term there. My grandmother and my mother both told me about visiting the reservation with my grandfather. My grandparents did not tell me where in Maine as I was very young and quite possible because of my age I didn't remember. My mother was quite young when she visited the reservation last and did know where she was going except the reservation in Maine. I also know from research some of the tribes in VT, NH, and ME were related to the Blackfeet. So, I believe it is possible, her family may have migrated east. Any ideas?

  1. She was born in Vermont Aug 1871 and married Arthur Judson abt 1888. Her daughter listed in the 1910 census was Leona M, born Sept 1898 in NH.

Alanson's WWII draft registration says that he was born in Grafton NH. Census records show him living in Warren, Grafton NH most of his life.

No where did she declare that she's Native American. There's probably no birth certificate if she was born in 1871.

I doubt the Blackfoot story, unless the family was born in the west and moved East. But there's no record of that. But she could be among the Schoolcraft records. You would have to physically pull them to find out.

    The reservations in Maine were:

    1 Aroostook Band of Micmacs:

    PO Box 772

    Presque Isle, ME 04769

2 Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians:

    RR 3 Box 450

    Houlton, ME 04730

3 Passamaquoddy Tribe of Indian Township:

    PO Box 301

    Princeton, ME 04668

4 Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point:

    PO Box 343

    Perry, ME 04667

    5 Penobscot Nation:

    Community Building

    Old Town, ME 04468

All of these tribes are excellent record keepers. I'd contact them with Eva's particulars, especially her month/year of birth. If she was a tribal member, they will have the records and will share them with you.

  2. Blackfeet is doubtful as they are from Montana/Saskatchewan area.  Maine tribes are Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, Abenaki, Penobscot, and Micmac.  You might try contacting the tribes there in Maine to see if they have record of your ancestors.
