Evaldas Siskevicius wins third stage and Bruno Sancho takes overall lead in 2011 Volta ao Alentejo
Velo Club la Pomme Marseille team’s Evaldas Siskevicius won the third stage of 2011 Volta ao Alentejo on Saturday, June 11.
The race started in Aljustrel and ended in Reguengos de Monsaraz. The 22-years-old Evaldas cover the distance of 155.6 kilometres in 4 hours and 2 seconds.
The race leader Bruno Sancho of LA/Antarte was the runner-up and Fabio Silvestre of Liberty Seguros/Sta. Maria Feira finished third.
Ricardo Garcia, Samuel Caldeira and Nick Van Der Lijke were in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively. The Spanish rider, Raul Alarcon was also in good form, but he failed to catch the sixty cyclists and grabbed the 61th place with 44 seconds behind
Evaldas.
The five cyclists including, Joao Matias, Flavio Cipriano, Flavio Gomes, Albino Oliveira and Fernando Carvalho were disqualified from the stage.
A four-man break was formed early in the stage, which included César Fonte (Barbot/Efapel), Yohan Cauquil (Velo Club la Pomme Marseille), Jose Goncalves (Liberty Seguros/Sta. Maria Feira) and Sergio Sousa (Barbot/Efapel).
All the cyclists worked together, but Cesar Fonte won the first climb of the stage ahead of Yohan. However, after few kilometres, Cesar was caught by the peloton.
Leonel Coutinho maintained his pace and won the second climb of the day and in third climb Rafael Reis took the lead ahead of Daniel Mestre.
In the final climb of the day, Jose Goncalves and Luis Afonso built an advantage of a few seconds, but both the riders failed to catch the Netherland. Ramon won the final climb of the stage.
Cesar Fonte won the overall Mountains classification with 8 points and Hugo Sabido and Yohan Cauquil were in the second spots with 3 points each. Leonel Coutinho won the title of young rider’s classification, ahead of Jon Aberasturi.
Bruno Sancho took the overall leader’s yellow jersey with the timing of 11 hours, 56 minutes and 22 seconds. Stage winner, Evaldas Siskevicius was the runner-up with 11 seconds behind Burno.
Sancho said, "It was a crazy finish, even thought I had won. Now, I want to finish with the yellow.”
Samuel Caldeira was in the third spot with a difference of 13 seconds.
The final stage will start in Montemor-o-Novo and end in Redondo. All the cyclists will cover a distance of 169.7 kilometres.
