Evaluating Internet Speeds?

I'm looking to subscribe to a high speed internet service and they give the following options, in terms of speeds:

HSI 4Meg/256K

HSI 9 Meg/512k

HSI 16Meg/1Meg

When 2 speeds are listed like this, how do you evaluate the overall internet speed? For instance, would the 4 Meg/256 K connection be 4 Mb/s or 256K/s?

  1. call them if you can

it might mean downloads 16meg uploads 1 meg

  2. The first number is the speed you can download at.  That's how quickly stuff gets to your computer from the internet.

The second number is the speed for uploading.  So how fast you can transfer a file from your computer to the Internet.
