I HAVE to reccomend Embird. This program is fairly easy to learn, and has one of the best teachers around (Kathy Jones of theflyingneedle.com.ca ) She is a GREAT teacher, and makes Embird soooo much easier.

I have been using Embird for years now, and have had VERY few problems with it.

Embird is highly recommended.  It can do everything that the other software can do, but it is much cheaper.  You can also add modules to it as your experience increases.  For conversion, download Wilcom truesizer, there is a link on http://www.dekatzenembroidery.co.za.  The conversion on Wilcom is more reliable than that of Embird.

If i were to reccomend a fav then it would have to be pe design v6.  Purely because as a beginner it is straight forward and has a great tutorial.  Had a search on google and this blog kinda gives all the features for digitizing software which is kinda great because the sofware is expensive and each persons requirements will be different so you need to make sure you get the correct one for you.
