Evan Dunham open to rematch with Sean Sherk
Evan Dunham would like a rematch against former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Sean “The Muscle Shark” Sherk. The two met in September at UFC 119, with Sherk being
declared the winner.
When Michael Buffer announced the decision, the fans in attendance at Canseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis expressed their displeasure by booing loudly. Many felt that Dunham was the more
aggressive and dominant fighter during the three round bout. Both combatants received $70,000 bonuses after being awarded “Fight of the Night”.
UFC president Dana White seemed to agree with the majority of the fans in attendance and stated that Dunham had been "robbed” by the judges. All three judges scored the fight 29-28, with
two giving it to Sherk for the split decision.
Dunham, speaking to fighthype.com had this to say: “I would like to move on, but I really want a rematch with Sherk, so I guess either way doesn’t matter to me. If they (UFC) offered me
the rematch, I would take it in a heartbeat, but if they don’t, I would understand why. I’m fine either way, but a rematch would be great.”
Prior to the fight with Sherk, Dunham was unbeaten in 11 mixed martial arts bouts and seemed to be on the fast track to battle for the UFC lightweight title. Sherk on the other hand was
trying to resurrect an MMA career that had been derailed due to injury. This was Sherk’s first MMA fight since May 2009.
The loss should not hurt Dunham in his quest for a title bout as the judges’ decision could have easily gone in his favour. Sherk will also benefit with his victory, proving that at 37,
he can still compete at a high level.
Dunham left the octagon at UFC with a record of 11-1, while Sherk improved to 34-4-1.
