Evan Geiselman removes Kolohe Andino from contention for ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
America’s Evan Geiselman emerged triumphant in the third heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that went down at the renowned surf-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday,
May 1.
Geiselman made his way through into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the competition after his wonderful performance in Round 3. His fellow countryperson Tim Reyes was also successful in making the Round 4 cut after getting hold of the runner-up position.
With a huge field of up-and-coming and international talent in contention for the prestigious title, there was plenty of action in store for the surfing fans in attendance at the event site. The flawless conditions prevailing at Lower Trestles were offering
plenty of potential scoring opportunities, though the surfers struggled to make the most of the chances.
The third heat of Round 3 featured one of the first upsets of the competition as Geiselman took down his compatriot and friend Kolohe Andino to eliminate him from the competition. America’s Reyes also managed to finish above Andino, while Australia’s Brent
Dorrington failed to adjust to the conditions, thus failing to make much of an impact in the heat.
The 18-year-old Geiselman showed off his smooth and stylish surfing prowess in clean two-to-four foot waves to steal most of the spotlight during the course of the battle. A couple of good waves took him to a heat-total of 13.60 points, thus putting him
in the end that held up until the end to earn him the win.
“Any time you enter a PRIME the heats are always pretty stacked,” Geiselman said. “It’s weird, I’ve been drawing Kolohe [Andino], every event he surfed, I’ve had a heat with him. It’s been fun. That heat was pretty slow and I actually haven’t made it out
of a heat in a PRIME yet, so that gives me a bit more confidence for the later rounds.”
Reyes finished just behind him on the score-board after putting on a pretty impressive performance for 12.84 points, thus successfully extending his life in the event.
Andino, the 18-year-old sensation from California, was nothing short of impressive during the four-man heat either, but a heat-total of 12.57 points proved to be inadequate under the circumstances.
Dorrington did not fare well in his first heat of the competition either, as he only managed to get to a heat-total of 7.93 points to find himself sitting in fourth place at the end of the heat. Both Andino and Dorrington were forced to step out of the contention
for the event title.
