Evangelista Cotto: Miguel should consider the option of walking away – Boxing News
Evangelista Cotto, former trainer for Miguel Cotto and uncle, believes it is about time for the WBA (Super) Light Middleweight Champion to retire from the sport. Evangelista believes this is the right time for Cotto to retire ‘with all his faculties intact’.
Miguel Cotto lost his WBA super light middleweight title to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Commenting on his nephew’s performance and future plans, Evangelista said, “Miguel should consider the option of walking away with all
his faculties intact. Boxers should not walk away when they are finished; they should walk away when they are still doing well. And right now, he has a great opportunity to retire. He did an excellent job, a great fight.”
Evangelista was Miguel Cotto’s trainer once, but in 2009 they both parted. As of now, Evangelista believes that Miguel Cotto was excellent against Mayweather and he even exposed Mayweather’s weaknesses to a certain extent.
While most fans believed Mayweather would knock out Cotto, it did not happen. Instead Mayweather bled from his nose and mouth while Cotto appeared unhurt by the end of the fight. According to Hall of Famer trainer Freddie Roach, Mayweather’s defence was
weak while Cotto had strong defending techniques.
Roach even mentioned that if Cotto was a strong puncher, he would have taken Mayweather down, as he already reached Mayweather’s face. The fight that last for 12 rounds had Cotto dominated six rounds in total. The eighth round of the match was Cotto’s best
when he unleashed a spree of power punches on Mayweather, and all the unbeaten American could do was ‘survive’ through them.
Even though Mayweather won, doubts regarding his capabilities have stirred up. Floyd Mayweather, who is considered invincible, is now thinking of retiring from the sport. After the fight, many critics are of the view that Mayweather is not the same speedy
fighter he once was. If this is the case, then Mayweather definitely needs to think about retirement and he needs to stay from Manny Pacquiao, who still is the same speedy power puncher he once was.
