Evans Cheruiyot to contest at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon race – Athletics news
With the announcement about the commencement date of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 9, spectators were pleased to learn the Evans Cheruiyot, winner of the 2008 event, will also be back only to add up to the thrill of the event.
With the presence of Evans in the event, the Men’s contest for the title will definitely present a worth watching contest. Evans has been the winner of the 2008 edition of the race, and though his long absence from the sport has affected his performance
on the field, but he is back with the similar resole he had depicted three years ago.
Questing for the title, the biggest challenge that the 29-year-old Kenyan will have to face will be his countryman, Bernard Kipyego, an athlete who ended the 2009 World Championships in Berlin with a silver medal. Joining them on the track and adding spark
to the showdown will be runners like Bazu Worku and Getu Feleke, Ethiopians who are well known for their below two hours and six minutes finishes.
On the Women’s side, the field will comprise of Ethiopian runners and traditional dominators of the track like Atsede Habtamu Besuye, the girl who had bagged the 2009 Berlin Marathon title along with Askale Tafa, winner of the 2007 Paris and Dubai Marathons.
While cherishing the presence of a strong field to mark the event, Carey Pinkowski, the Executive Race Director, who is also having a new meet record on his cards, said, “These athletes round out an elite field that is not only dynamic, but has the potential
to attack the record books. If the weather is good, there could be some reshuffling of not just the Chicago Marathon records, but also the list of all-time fastest certified marathons.”
Adding up to his remarks, the Executive director of the race said that the field for the event was fearless and could go about challenging the previously in place records. He said, “You’re looking at a field that is not going to be afraid to push the pace
with a mix of young, fearless athletes, and seasoned performers who have tasted victory and success at the marathon distance.
Just like many of his counterparts, Cheruiyot, who had emerged as a formidable runner after bagging his Chicago title back in 2008, was attacked by some severe injuries that simply did not allow him to appear in running competitions. He could only resume
his running career in this year’s Dubai Marathon, where he managed to end the run for a second position. This certainly was not a bad performance, and if he could reclaim his spark for the race, there are strong chances that he can still prevail against younger
runners.
