if the suspects are all dead? also wouldn't the statute of limitations come into play here even if the perps were alive? Seems to me their resouces would be better used solving present day crimes.

  1. Yeah, especially when they have so many unsolved more recent cases.

  2. There are a couple of reasons why

    1) some of the answers to unsolved cold cases are the answers to present day cases.

    2) some cases are copycats so intel on cold cases would help to solve present cases. As well some of the perps can be within the family. ya know like taking over the family job.

    3) its the principle of the thing. like allowing the victim to rest in peace and just being able to figure out what really happened.

  3. Closure for the family, It makes the family feel better knowing what happend.

  4. For future reference. Crimes are always similar to a certain degree then we get copy cats and such so sometimes present day crimes look a lot like crimes done in the past.

  5. The familys would feel better knowing who the killer is

  6. The short and simple answer is closure.  Closure and sheer morbid curiosity.  Though it may seem like a waste of time in actuality solving "dated" cases helps to hone the skills of investigators and also gives them a new perspective on current/modern cases as well.

  7. There is no statute of limitation on murder or kidnapping. Justice isn't always about sending someone to jail, sometimes it is about giving closure to the surviving family members.

The FBI and large police forces have unit dedicated to solving cold cases. They are not taking resources away from current cases. Also, sometimes present day crimes are related to cold cases. Solve one, solve the other.

  8. Closure for the family members that may still be alive?  My grandmother's hit and run killer was never caught.  It wasn't a 100 years ago and I never did know her, but I do wonder what happened to the driver of the car.

  9. I think the purpose is to show criminals that they can't get away with a crime. Even after death, their reputations are tarnished if they are finally caught.

As for use of resources, I think that the more you follow up on forensic evidence or anything else, the better you get at it. Closing cold cases, not only clears the evidence lockers, it allows investigators to hone their skills.

Closing cold cases may lead to evidence against current offenders. I feel that everyone needs to know that they will get caught, eventually.

  10. it may be good for how criminals think, Information is knowledge into solving current crimes

  11. No statue of limitations on murder.
