Even if you don't believe in global warming?

Aren't you worried about the effects all of our polluting and wasting will have on the environment, our health, and quality of life? I mean, don't you think eventually we'll run out of space to put all of our garbage? What will we do, build over landfills? Don't you believe that breathing in all of the exhaust fumes in overpopulated areas will have some type of adverse effect on our health? Even if you don't care or believe in global warming can't you atleast agree that living in a cleaner environment couldn't possibly hurt?

  1. Even if you don't care or believe in global warming can't you atleast agree that living in a cleaner environment couldn't possibly hurt?

Well, if it cost your job, or the job of your spouse if it cripples any future you children may have at earning a living.  If it forces your elec. rates up to the point that the choice is food, or power.  If they drive the cost of gas up to the point that you can not afford to drive at all, in other words, if they end our way of life to be replaced with a living standard much more in common with 1808 instead of 2008 then would it hurt?   And remember all the while, china, Korea, India, most of south America are exempt from what we allow to hobble us.

  3. Nope --- not worried about running out of landfill space anytime within the next 10000 years or so---

Our air is multiple times cleaner than in the 1970s--- and current new cars pollute so little they must measure it in parts per BILLION. Back in the 1970s early 1980s our current new cars would have registered ZERO --- on the parts per million equipment used at that time.

  4. You make perfect sense Kate unfortunately you can see, even from the answers here, that some people can't see the logic and/or mutual benefits that would accrue.

Boatman, for example, not being worried about landfill for the next 10,000 years puts him in a very small minority (luckily for us!) and also spouts - whether malevolentlyor just out of plain ignorance it's hard to tell - some absolute rubbish!

Emissions are not measured in ppb (see below) and "our air is multiple times cleaner than in the 1970s." is very vague - in many cities the number of days that result in health warnings is generally on the increase for example and what exactly is meant be 'our'; in many cases, this means that air in one place has been made cleaner by concentrating piollution in another place away from population centres.

Globally, air pollution has worsened since the 1970s.

And I believe is repeating the usual fear-of-change issues:

Clean ecosystems can be synoymous with high-tech living, good, high-paying jobs, competitive global advantages through technology and innovation, etc

This may be why the € (from AGW accepting and embracing Europe) has done so well against the $ (from oil dependent, AGW rejecting USA).

As for the China, India thing - get real: The US pollutes 25-50X more per capita. When these rates are more comparable, then let's talk about "hobbling"!

  5. I actually am not convinced that global warming is caused by CO2. many people critisize me on this. However, i always say that it doesnt matter whether global warming is caused by humans or not. we ARE going to run out of oil, we ARE going to run out of food and space. burning of trash porduces the most toxic chemicals known to man (dioxins) are fisheries are polluted with mercury and everyday the problems only get worse.

this is my position: we should clean up the environment, and free ourselvs from dependence on fossile fuels, if global warming does exsist than we are all set, if it doesnt than we still have greatly helped the planet and imporved the health of everyone on earth. why not make the air clean, why not become energy independant.

  6. everyone is in favor of a clean environment, ok?

But people have a right to make a living, and things are likely to get real ugly, if we are forced into poverty due to this global warming farce.

Notice that clear nights cool off rapidly, cloudy or humid nights do not. Think of the desert at night.

This is because water vapor is 95% of the greenhouse effect, CO2 only 4% . you  should be very suspicious of the people who would lead us off an economic cliff, over this

  7. Kate - of course we're interested in practical conservation.  Global warming is not about that.  It is about money & power.

Edit - Kate - look at the solutions they propose - restricting your freedom and forcing you to pay money out of pocket.

Run like h**l from them my dear.

  8. Well, Kate.....you're right, of course - but  Americans aren't going to give up their cushy lifestyles or stop squandering Earth's precious beauty and bounty until we're forced to do so.

Arrogance, ignorance, avarice, neglect, sloth and hubris have all set in to make us believe we're 'superior' to all other living things on Earth. Instead of being good stewards to those things over which we were given dominion, we've chosen to rape, pillage, plunder and pummel all those things that give us life.

We refuse to REduce, REuse and REcycle because it's easier just to toss our trash into landfills. We don't worry about things like air pollution or poisoned waterways because it hasn't - yet - seriously impacted on our quality of life. We continue to tear up the Earth, spill oil into our gulfs, over fish the oceans, and decimate the rain forests for the sake of our own profit, comfort and convenience.

We would rather scorch regions of the Earth with unconstitutional, illegal, immoral 'wars' than try to unify the world and save us from ourseves and our own self-destruction. Hatred, bias, bigotry, jealousy, and prejudice all take precendent over the protection and preservation of the planet that gives us sustenance.

We don't even consider the significance of things like the ugly horse shoe crab*; krill; poisonous Amazonian frogs; Venus fly traps; remote Eskimo tribes; daffodils; kittens; tsetse flies; wetlands; 'uncivilized' tribesmen in the dense Brazilian jungles; mangrove forests; dolphins; elephants; swamps; redwood trees; coral reef or all other species of plants and animals that we need to sustain our very lives.

So we continue to allow smoke-belching factories and vehicle emissions poison our air; we keep ripping off the tops of mountains to get to more coal; we ignore all the chemicals we pour into our fresh water supplies; and we  let the valuable rain forests get chopped down to make room for grazing cattle so that we can eat cheap BigMacs and gorge ourselves on an order of super-sized fries.

And as we tool around in our gas-guzzling SUVs and Hummers; build lavish homes on fragile beaches; disrupt caribou migration patterns in one of the few remaining pristine regions on Earth; dine on $100 sushi in five-star restaurants, and live in six-bedroom homes with four bathrooms to accommodate three people, we neglect to understand that everything - EVERYTHING - on this planet is here for a purpose. And as we continue to destroy all of Earth's beauty and bounty - as we continue to waste the planet's resources - WE WILL EVENTUALLY SEE THE EXTINCTION OF OUR OWN SPECIES.

And for those calloused people who say, "who cares? I'll be dead anyway before that happens" - let me remind you that most of us will ultimately have grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will pay dearly for our gluttony and selfishness.    -RKO-  07/09/08

  9. Aren't you worried about the effects all of our polluting and wasting will have on the environment, our health, and quality of life?  NO.

I mean, don't you think eventually we'll run out of space to put all of our garbage?  NO.

What will we do, build over landfills? YES

Don't you believe that breathing in all of the exhaust fumes in overpopulated areas will have some type of adverse effect on our health? NO.

Even if you don't care or believe in global warming can't you at least agree that living in a cleaner environment couldn't possibly hurt?

NO.  That is a sneaky way of asking people go along with the global warming lie.

  10. Living in a cleaner environment would be fine, as long we don't have to pay for it because of some lie.

  11. I am worried about pollution, of course, but I believe America has more pressing concerns, like the fact that we're AT WAR!
