    The most practical use of solar energy is water heating....

    It's low cost and can yeild the same results of reducing energy usage as a 2kw solar panel system, which is very expensive. (depending on hot water usage of course)


  2. Gas water heaters have electronic sensors in them to monitor the pilot light and temperture settings.  So yes your gas water heater uses electricity but only about the same as a 100 W light bulb.  It's better than a blown up house.
