Even though my options setting

Question

Even though my options setting says "Double-click to open an item (single-click to select)", things are getting selected when the cursor is merely poised over them without any clicking. Often this means an email or a program is opened without me wanting it to be, or it may mean when I start typing the location where the type is inserted is not where I had clicked but instead where the cursor had moved to in the meanwhile.
