What are the jumps called that collapse in the middle if a horse runs into it hard enough. There is a pin in the middle that gets released and in falls apart in two pieces. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

  1. Like others are saying they are Break-away Jumps

  2. Tangible fences aka break away/knock down/collapsible fences

  3. they use the frangible pin system.

some call them frangible pin jumps

    others call them breakaway jumps.

  4. Break-away Jumps

  5. Break-away jumps....or thats just what we call them.

Sorry i dont know the technical name.

    :)

  6. I believe you are referring to the new "frangible" pins, which are supposed to collapse and come apart if they are hit hard enough. The goal behind them is supposedly safety, but the jury is still out on whether or not they actually help prevent serious injuries and falls.

  7. That is called a frangible pin. It is designed to let the jump collapse if the horse hits it hard enough, usually by hitting it with his chest instead of a foot. The purpose is to prevent rotational falls which usually occur when a horse does not get his front end up fast enough, hits the jump with his chest, and flips over. They can only be used on certain types of jumps, such as open oxers, and only on fences of a certain size (chest height) or larger. I believe that all cross country courses that host recognized shows are supposed to have them installed at all fences (where they are appropriate) at preliminary level or higher by the end of next year.  I'm not 100% sure about the deadline, but I think I'm at least close.

  8. they are called brake-away jumps. Sabrina
